Session 5 - Povery - Global Context
I have learned that globalization can be good and bad for the United States. Allowing import and export between the United States and various countries opens the doors to a free market with consequences. A cheap labor work force and more people living in poverty. Corporations begin to reap the benefit of saving money by sending jobs overseas for lower wages and laying off people here in the United States. Global Technology increases efficiency in the work place, but also puts people on the unemployment line. We must not forget that for every job eliminated, the U.S. tax base decreases. More people are placed into poverty with the loss of jobs and the people living in poverty are not provided with some of the basic necessities when the Governments tax base decreases. I feel that the Government and Private Corporations need to invest more money into creating good paying jobs. Increasing the minimum wage could also help to keep people from living in poverty.

There were some really good points noted in your section 5. There are alot of points to consider when we think about poverty and the effects it may have on taxes, job cuts, etc. I think you presented a good solution to helping poverty by increasing minimum wage. It is always good to offer a solution to a problem and personal feedback. Hopefully, there will be a solution soon to resolve and decrease poverty rates.

ReplyDeleteWhat if there is no money to put towards creating new, good paying jobs?
ReplyDeleteI agree that out-sourcing jobs has many consequences for the US, but I also think out-sourcing jobs is good for other countries. In my opinion sending thousands of military to Iraq for nine years has worse consequences than job out-sourcing. Instead of worry about our own society America soent nine years AND counting try to build another country that doeesnt even want our help. We would have way more money to create new jobs if we could bring all of our troops home from war.
ReplyDeleteHey Aerielle! Im just curious to why you believe we need to bring our troops home right now? I mean, the reason we sent our troops over there in the first place was because of 9/11--To protect and serve our country from any future attacks that may happen on the US. How are we supposed to protect our country if our troops are not defending America at war right now?..
