Session 4 - The Geography of Poverty

Update to: What I think is being done about poverty?

The video titled "Do Neighborhoods Matter" speaks to the heart of the problem about children and families living in poor neighborhoods.  Children and family members are drastically affected by their surroundings.  Neighborhoods infested with abandoned/ rundown housing and crime affects the health and well being of all members of the community.  I agree with Professor George Galster statement "Neighborhoods should constitute a small percentage of low income families."  Improving neighborhoods could be accomplished by additional State Government Intervention.  The State and Local Government throughout the United States need to work on expanding  the "Inclussionary Zoning Policy" program.  This program mandates that builders must set aside a portion of new housing for low income families.  Neighborhoods would become more diverse and intern this would help to move more families out of poverty stricken neighborhoods. When families are afforded the opportunity to better their lives with better schools for their kids along with better neighborhoods to live in, their quality of life improves substantially.

  1. Environment does have a huge affect on people. If children are given the opportunity to succeed, then that makes all the difference. Neighborhoods do need to be improved and low income families should be given a chance too. I think that "Inclussionary Zoning Policy" is definitely a good idea and changes needs to be enforced.

  2. Very nice entry, I completely agree with how the neighborhoods affect people. For example if a person of low intelligence level and skills is put into a good well rounded neighborhood he will be better off and learn the good behavior and skills. Also the opposite applying an intelligent person who is well off moves into a bad neighborhood he will pick up bad habits. People are very influential. Who ever you get together with thats what you become.

  3. I agree with you 110%!! The quality of a childs live does depend on their environment. We do need zoning and controlled poverty in our neighborhoods I think these items combined will have a positive affect on the quality of live for many poor families.

  4. Very good! I also agree with this blog! The professor in the video made some very interesting points when explaining how "Neighborhoods Do Matter"! I do feel that the environment in which one lives, can have a positive or negative effect on their values and their way of life. Hopefully, we can improve our neighborhoods and cut the poverty rate out!!!! Nice work
